Captain James Cook takes possession

Peering across Raukawakawa/Cook Strait to Kāpiti in the distant gloom the other day, atop Motuara in Tōtaranui/Queen Charlotte Sound, Aotearoa New Zealand, where, Wednesday, 31st January 1770, Captain James Cook raised the British flag, and “took possession” of Te Wai Pounamu/South Island in the name of King George lll.

I suppose that’s what the US is trying on with Venezuela right now, and our own government is permitting at Ihumātao.
